Description
Herbs, stem short or absent. Leaves radical, 7 x 5 cm, ovate, apex obtuse, base cuneate into a winged petiole, villous; petiole 5-6 cm long, sheathing at base. Flowers in elongated axillary dense spikes, bracts ovate, keeled; sepals 4, 2.5 mm long, ovate; corolla 2.5 mm long, salver-shaped, shortly lobed at apex, white; stamens 4, epipetalous, anthers versatile; ovary 1-celled; ovules 5-10; style 1, terminal, stigma linear. Capsule circumscissile, 6 x 3 mm; seeds many, oblong, black.Plantago is a genus of about 200 species of small, inconspicuous plants commonly called plantains or fleaworts. The common name plantain is shared with the unrelated cooking plantain, a kind of banana. Most are herbaceous plants, though a few are subshrubs growing to 60 cm (24 in) tall.
