Planting & Care
Trachycarpus fortunei is grown as an indoor plant and are not kept outdoor especially in rainy season. For cleaning purpose, it can be washed with a mild shower.
Probably the best palm for the temperate, continental or maritime climate garden and is equally tolerant to various soil and light conditions.
The leaves on wagnerianus are smaller and stiffer than fortunei, making it much more tolerant of winds. This palm is probably a natural variation of Trachycarpus fortunei, but most palm enthusiasts believe that it deserves a species status in its own right.
Sunlight: Need bright light with three or four hours a day of direct sunlight. New growth will be limited if palms receive insufficient light.
Soil: Does best in Rich, well-drained, damp but not wet soils with above average fertility.
Water: Frequent watering cause palms grow moderately, important to make the potting mixture thoroughly moist, but allowing the top centimetre of the potting mixture to dry out before watering again.
Temprature: Completely unharmed by temperatures down to 7°C (45°F).
Fertilizer: No special demands compared to other types of palms. A slow release fertilizer with an N/P/K ratio of 3:1:2 or 3:1:3. Thus, a formulae of 15:5:15 or 12:4:8 would be adequate. Select a preparation that contains microelements and is preferably a slow release formulae.
Care:
- A palm tree needs to establish its roots first.
- Only when the roots have developed adequately does leaf development take place.
- Under normal circumstances no need to provide any protection in winter.
- However, it would be sensible to wrap the crown and trunk of your palm with fleece in a prolonged period of sub zero temperatures.
- Watering in rest period – sparingly Watering in active growth period – moderately Light – bright Temperature in rest period – min 7°C max 24°C (45-75°F) Temperature in active growth period – min 16°C max 24°C (61-75°F) Humidity – low
